Volterra is a city built on a hilly ridge 545 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by two defensive walls, one Etruscan and the other Medieval. Historically, Volterra was one of the most important centres of Tuscany and it is still known today both for its superb monuments, some dating back 3,000 years, and for its traditional alabaster crafts

Apart from its numerous Etruscan, Roman and Medieval buildings and monuments, Volterra has some noteworthy churches as well as three museums of considerable artistic and historical value
